Lessons from the Sky

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to be a bird?

I wonder if they look at us and think we’re quite absurd.

I wonder if they wonder why we never leave the ground,

they soar high above the treetops, whilst us humans are earthbound.

I wonder what it’s like to feel the wind beneath your wings,

as you soar and dip and dive, and feel the freedom that it brings.

To look down at the world below, so tiny from up there,

with freedom in their flight and grace without a care.

I wonder if they speak to other animals and trees,

communicating with the flowers and, of course, our friends, the bees.

I wonder if they have worries, overthink, or overstress,

I wonder if they look at us and think we’re such a mess.

I wonder if they ever feel there’s something they must prove,

or simply trust their wings and let the wind guide where they move.

They seem to spend their days just being who they are,

whilst we spend ours wondering if we’re falling short by far.

Perhaps they never question where they’re going or why,

they simply trust their wings and let the breeze decide.

Maybe that’s the lesson in watching birds up in the sky:

to loosen our grip on everything… and let ourselves just fly.
